Green Roof Systems

When designing or installing a green roof it is important to have a system that has the option to either receive a product or a total system warranty.  A product system warranty will warrant all of the products that are purchased for a project, which would be the same as a manufacturer’s warranty, and a total system warranty will warranty both the labor and the materials for both the roofing and green roofing portions of the project.  These warranties are beneficial to the owner since they allow for a single point of contact if a repair is ever needed for your green roofing project.  Knowing that there is one contact with one warranty gives an owner peace of mind that their green roofing project is covered in case that any unforeseen circumstance ever occurs.

Hanging Gardens offers various warranty solutions for our customers. Through our consulting and design portion of our business we commonly provide a products warranty. These warranties are exceptionally common for projects less than 5,000 S.F.  Through the specification of our Hanging Gardens Packaged Systems, we are able to offer a 10 year product warranty for all of the products installed on your project (This does not include plant materials, which can receive a warranty if the client agrees to follow Hanging Gardens maintenance recommendations). Product warranties for larger projects are available, but because of the complexity and increased liability, we generally recommend a total system warranty. These warranties cover both the roofing and vegetative components of your project.  The total system warranty, which have become very popular, is provided in partnership with one of the green roofing industry leaders, Roofmeadow.  With a Roofmeadow specified and designed system, Hanging Gardens has the ability to provide up to a 30 year total system warranty.

Notwithstanding the importance of the warranties for a project, purchasing from a single source has one significant additional benefit which is discounted pricing for purchasing a total system. Because Hanging Gardens has either the means to manufacture or relationships in place that allow it to source all of the green roofing products needed for a project, we have the ability to control pricing. Through these economies of scale, we offer total system packages for your projects that will help enable you to have the competitive pricing needed to be able to win your next project.

Slope Stabilization

Hanging Gardens offers various systems to retain the engineered growth media and vegetation. One of our erosion control solutions is a permeable non-woven geotextile installed directly over the media that prevents heavy winds from scouring the media and uprooting freshly planted plugs or cuttings. Our other systems are used for steep slope green roof applications (up to an 8:12 pitch) and secured to the roof membrane system to ensure the structural stability of the green roof. Our systems do not require roof membrane penetrations.

Irrigation Systems

Extensive green roof systems require little or no irrigation, however semi-intensive and intensive green roof systems require irrigation due to the plants root depths on those projects. In the instance of a drought, the system will detect low moisture content in the media and the irrigation process will begin releasing potable water or harvested rainwater. The system is also tied to the roof drain system to prevent standing water. Lastly, the roof drain inspection systems are designed to monitor the irrigation and drainage processes to make sure the water is being managed properly.

Pavers/ Pedestal Systems

On-grade permeable pavers allow water to percolate into the ground instead of producing runoff. For green roofs, these pavers help control the flow of water on your roof so it flows into the proper drainage downspout. In poured applications, porous pavement reduces the amount of impervious surface area on your site.

Railings/ Fall Protection

Fall arrest system for roofs up to a 5% slope with stainless steel anchor posts that are not mechanically fixed to the building structure.

Legal rules require creating safe working conditions where there is a risk of falling.  Attachment points are to be established for personal safety equipment to prevent falls if the difference in levels is more than 9 feet. Our Diadem FLG fall prevention and lightning conductor system fulfills these requirements without mechanical fastening or penetrating the membrane.  The system uses the weight of the growing media to hold it securely in place.  Design and installation can only be performed by certified installers.

FLG fall arrest systems can be built in on any green roof with a slope of up to 5%.  The wet friction coefficient between any layers of the build-up shouldn’t be less than mju 0.5.  These systems are certified for use with growing medias with a minimum load of 16.385 lbs/sq. ft. dry weight.  If the system is also utilized for lightning conducting, the plan should be reviewed by a lightning protection expert.

Monitoring/ Testing

Depending on whether you are designing or installing a green roof or stormwater mitigation system, commissioning and monitoring is a choice that should be considered. The reassurance that if your green roofing project has a leak and that it can be quickly resolved without being too intrusive. Knowing that your stormwater filtration system is operating effectively is peace of mind that is worth the additional cost. This pragmatic thinking will ensure your clients satisfaction with your work and the preservation of your reputation.

At Hanging Gardens we offers leak detection systems, heat transfer & stormwater monitoring and green roof media testing for your green roof and filtration monitoring and bio-rentention media testing for stormwater systems.
